What Are the Benefits of Mesh Coils?
Over the past few years, mesh coils have seemingly taken over the vaping industry. Virtually every new vape tank now comes with mesh coils by default, and that’s true of many pod systems as well. Manufacturers have retroactively added mesh coils to all of their popular last-generation tanks. If you can’t find mesh coils for the vape tank that you’re currently using, there’s a good chance that the manufacturer is no longer making coils for that tank at all.
So, why are mesh coils so popular – and should you be using a vape tank with a mesh coil? The short answer to the second question is almost certainly “yes” – and if you want the long answer, you’re going to learn everything you ever wanted to know in this list of the benefits of mesh coils.
Why Do Mesh Vape Coils Exist?
Vape coils are called “coils” because the heating surface of a vape coil is traditionally a resistance wire coiled into a spiral shape – and for a long time, the spiral-shaped vape coil worked just fine. Problems began to creep in, however, as people began to demand more and more performance from their vape tanks. The way to build a vape tank that produces bigger vapor clouds is by building a coil with greater surface area. Manufacturers accomplished that by using heavier wires and by adding additional wires to the coil heads.
Eventually, the vape coil arms race resulted in the creation of coils with as many as 12 individual wires working in tandem. It was getting to the point where high-end vape coils had unreasonable power requirements. They were also becoming far too expensive. Mesh coils exist because manufacturers had taken the traditional spiral-shaped vape coils as far as they could possibly go. The only way to push the performance envelope further was by creating something entirely new.
What Are Mesh Coils?
In a mesh coil, the heating surface isn’t a spiral-wrapped wire. Instead, it’s a strip of mesh rolled into a cylindrical shape. If you removed the mesh strip from the coil, you’d have something resembling a metal window screen. You can find mesh coils with multiple mesh strips working in tandem, just like the previous generation of cloud chasing coils. Sextuple mesh coils seem to be the limit at the moment, but single, dual and triple mesh coils are more popular.
Mesh Coils Have Lower Power Requirements
The first benefit of mesh coils stems from their low mass. As mentioned above, the primary way to increase the vapor production of a vape coil is by increasing the coil’s surface area. With traditional heating wires, the way to do that is by using a thicker wire gauge or by using a wire that’s twisted or braided. When you do that, though, you end up with a coil that has a high mass and requires a very high wattage for efficient operation. Before mesh coils appeared on the market, it was getting to the point where you’d have no chance of enjoying the latest and greatest vape coils unless you had a dual-battery mod capable of operating at well over 100 watts.
If your goal is to create a vape coil with the highest possible surface area, a mesh strip can do that job much more efficiently than a round wire. Mesh is so much more efficient, in fact, that it requires a much lower wattage to deliver the same level of performance you’d get from a traditional cloud chasing coil. With a mesh coil, there’s no need to own a vape mod that feels like a brick in your pocket; a single-battery mod can do the job just as well.
Mesh Coils Have Longer Wick Life
If you could cut a traditional vape coil in half, you’d see areas where the heating surface doesn’t make firm contact with the wick. The thick wires simply aren’t good for promoting even and consistent contact between the metal and the cotton – and that leads to uneven heating and a burned wick. A mesh coil, in contrast, has a much flatter profile. It touches the wick much more firmly, promoting even heating and helping to prevent the wick from burning. If you use coil-friendly e-liquid, you shouldn’t have to clean mesh coils as often as you do traditional coils.
Mesh Coils Operate Quietly
When you have a vape coil in which the heating surface doesn’t make firm and even contact with the wick, short coil life isn’t your only concern. The areas of the heating wire that only touch the cotton lightly or don’t touch it at all will harbor little pools of e-liquid – and when you vape, those pools will pop. That’s why the cloud chasing coils of the past tended to pop and crackle loudly during operation. A mesh coil, in comparison, is almost silent. Because the e-liquid has nowhere to condense and pool, mesh coils generally don’t pop. They also don’t spit e-liquid into your mouth. When you use a vape tank with a mesh coil, the only thing you’ll usually hear is a gentle “whoosh.”
Mesh Coils Offer Amazing Cloud Production and Flavor
Reading this article, you’ve learned that mesh coils offer more surface area relative to their mass than traditional coils. They also offer more even heating, superior longevity and quieter operation – and you haven’t even learned about the most important benefit of mesh coils yet. Mesh coils may offer an enormous list of benefits for convenience and reliability, but the biggest reason why you want to buy a tank with a mesh coil right away is because they simply deliver the biggest clouds and best flavors that are currently possible with any vaping device. Mesh coils are so much better than traditional coils that virtually every vaper should be using them.
Mesh Coils Are the Easiest Vape Coils to Clean
As you already know from browsing this site, our claim to fame here at ROBO2020 is that we’ve created the world’s first fully automatic vape coil cleaner. All that you need to do is put your dirty coils in the ROBO2020 vape coil cleaner along with a little water and turn the device on. When the cleaning cycle is done, you’ll pour the water out and start the drying cycle. Your coils come out of ROBO2020 ready to use immediately, and the best part is that the entire process only takes about 30 minutes.
So, what does all of this have to do with mesh coils? The final benefit of mesh coils is that they’re much easier to clean and reuse than other vape coils. If you’re using a traditional cloud chasing coil, you’re almost certainly using a coil with multiple wires twisted or braided together. Twisted wires are absolutely loaded with nooks and crannies, and coil gunk builds up on all of those surfaces. If you think that ROBO2020 does a great job with traditional vape coils, just wait until you see what it can do with mesh coils. With fewer areas where coil gunk can collect, you’ll find that mesh coils come out even cleaner and shiner than traditional coils.
